The Brief for this project is to revitalise the existing Cockburn Town Square to make it more user friendly and for it to become a destination.
Together with extensive upgraded landscaping by PlanE, we have designed the built form on the adjoining Lot 7 as temporary urban elements to support activity and amenity in the short term until the surrounding building developments are realised.
The built form is made up by a large raised 45m long by 3m high suspended ‘lantern‘ which is backlit and straddles the ground floor activities. The ‘lantern’ is scaled to respond to the space and legibility at distance. At night it will have a dramatic light beacon effect and during the day it becomes a landmark element that orientates and organises the new elements.
New activities include a cafe in a converted sea container, a bike storage pod with lockers and toilets and a large screen to create spatial nodes and control the micro climate.
This is an exciting urban design project.
